It was first realised in 1881 by mathematician Julia. I saw it for the first time in 1973 and have been intrigued by it ever since. Benoit Mandelbrot got to see it March 1st 1980, using an IBM. The waves are similar to the ones, the human brain uses to collect, store and direct the thinking and motor co-ordinations of our actions and reactions.
